We have had some nice comments this week about our genealogy work this is a service we offer to try and trace local family history. One customer said “Dear Pat, Thank you for all the information. You are a real star. Family history is really fascinating and it is great when you can get help like you have given me.” We offer this service at a small charge and all the information you need is on the website under services. Would you like the chance to find out about local family history?
The museum houses many documents and photographs giving details of a bygone age in the Millom area. We have an extensive display devoted to the Hodbarrow Iron mining industry, which includes maps and plans, as well as documents and photographs. Other industries are not forgotten – shipbuilding was an important occupation in the 19th/early 20th centuries; the blanket making industry centred on Hallthwaites is also featured. Maybe one of your ancestors came to Millom from Ireland, or Cornwall to work in the iron mines.
We have worked with people from all over the world to help them learn more about their own Millom area family history. If you are interested in using our services, please, do get in touch.
Our resident genealogist has access to extensive local records held at the museum. We also have a wide range of graveyard inscription CD’s from different local churches which are in the shop department.
Please feel free to ask any questions by giving us an email and if there is anything you would like to discuss further.
